Position Summary:

The Associate Dean for Student Affairs serves as the chief student affairs officer of HCOM (Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine) and is responsible for the provision of services and support that promote the overall success andwell beingof medical students across the three campuses of the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, serving approximately 1000 students. This leadership role involves overseeing a wide range of student services and programs, including those related to advising, financial aid, learning services, student life,well beingand others as may be needed. The Associate Dean fosters a positive and supportive campus environment, ensuring that students thrive academically, emotionally, and socially throughout their medical education journey. This position collaborates with other academic leaders and faculty in the development and implementation of initiatives that are designed to ensure the progress and success of Heritage College students.

Primary Responsibilities:

Leadership and Administration:



  • Fosters a positive and supportive campus environment, ensuring that students thrive academically, emotionally, and socially throughout their medical education journey Lead and oversee the Office of Student Affairs, providing strategic direction and operational management for a robust set of student-related programs, events and services.


  • Serve as a key member of the HCOMs leadership team, advising on matters relating to studentwell being, engagement, and success.


  • Maintain a high level of knowledge of trends and best practices in medical education student affairs.


  • Key responsible leader to ensure Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) Standards are met for student affairs and services for HCOM.


  • Collaborate with faculty, administrators, and staff across the college in the development and implementation of programs and services.


  • Collaborate with the Office of Medical Education and leadership at Dublin and Cleveland campuses to ensure effective delivery of services across campuses and clinical locations.


  • Collaborate with University staff to ensure effective use of University resources and compliance with applicable policies, procedures and protocols.

Student Services:



  • Ensure the efficient and effective delivery of financial aid, residency advising, match services, learning services, registration/records (including class attendance and accommodations, in collaboration with University services).

Student Success:



  • In partnership with the Office of Medical Education, develop and implement initiatives to help students to succeed.


  • Engage with faculty-led Committees on Student Progress and Professionalism and Student Success Committee.

Student Well Being:



  • Considering the unique challenges faced by medical students, develop and implement programs to support studentwell beingand resilience, including the provision of mental health and wellness services.


  • Provide guidance and resources to students on issues related to academic performance, mental health, and career development.


  • Serve as a confidential (to the degree allowable by law) advisor and resource for students seeking assistance, offering personal and professional support as needed.


  • Foster respect for differences and ensuring that all students feel welcomed and supported.

Student Life:



  • Oversee student organizations, clubs, and other extracurricular activities, ensuring they align with the mission and values of the medical school.


  • Key responsible leader for HCOMs signature events (Medical School Orientation, Commencement and White Coat/Convocation).

Policy and Advocacy:



  • Work closely with leadership to create and implement policies regarding student life, conduct, and academic progression.


  • Advocate for student needs and concerns at the administrative level and represent the interests of students in institutional decision-making.

Assessment and Continuous Improvement:



  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of student affairs programs and initiatives through feedback, surveys, and other forms of assessment.


  • Implement improvements based on student feedback and institutional goals, ensuring ongoing enhancement of student experience and success.

Professional Development and Mentorship:



  • Provide mentorship to and contribute to personal development of students, fostering their growth as compassionate, effective, and well-rounded physicians.


  • Support faculty development related to student affairs, guiding faculty members in their interactions with students and addressing student concerns.

Crisis Management and Conflict Resolution:



  • Address student concerns related to academic or personal crises, and coordinate responses to student emergencies in collaboration with appropriate others.


  • Mediate conflicts and facilitate resolutions between students, faculty, and administration as needed.

Management:



  • Lead and inspire a team of student affairs professionals with a shared vision of preparing future primary care osteopathic physicians for Ohio and beyond. Provide comprehensive guidance, support, and direction to the team through performance management, mentorship, training, and coaching. Foster a collaborative environment that encourages continuous improvement and professional development, and aligns team efforts with the colleges mission and goals.

College, University, and External Service:



  • Serve as a voting member of the Heritage College Executive Committee, contributing to strategic decision-making and overall college direction. Actively participate in ad-hoc committees and cross-functional teams to address key initiatives and challenges. Represent Heritage College at the university, state and national levels, promoting the colleges mission, values, and achievements while building relationships with key stakeholders in the field of medical education and medical school student affairs best practice.
