Job Description

PURPOSE OF THE CLASSIFICATION: Responsible for the participation of transplanting, removing and maintaining trees and other vegetation on City property and City right-of-way. ESSENTIAL TASKS: Operates various types of machinery including stump removers, brush chippers, tree spades, chain saws and aerial lift vehicles. Participates in transplanting, removing and maintaining trees and other horticulture on City property. Assists in maintaining a comprehensive program or ongoing tree maintenance to including fertilizing, chemical treatment, watering, transplanting, diagnosing, and removing. Participates in organizing annual ceremonies and events. Performs other tasks peculiar to department as assigned. Must report to work on a regular and timely basis. REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: The Forestry Maintenance Worker reports directly to the Forestry Supervisor. The Forestry Maintenance Worker does not have any direct reports or supervisory responsibilities QUALIFICATIONS: Training and Experience: Graduation from high school or possession of a GED, and two (2) years of experience as a trades helper or maintenance laborer in any of the construction and maintenance trades, preferably including some work experience involving horticulture and the operation of light to medium construction equipment. Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills: General knowledge of manual labor work practices, methods, tools and materials of varied semiskilled maintenance and horticulture work in forestry management including use of fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides, fungicides and understanding of soil types. Good knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work and the safe and efficient operation of equipment; and safe work practices. Ability to utilize and instruct others in operation of common forestry equipment including stump removers, brush chippers, tree spades, chain saws and aerial lift vehicles. Necessary skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and fellow employees. Occasional crawling. Vision, speech and hearing sufficient to perform essential tasks. Punctuality and reasonable attendance is essential. Must submit to drug screening and fitness to work physical exam. Licenses and Certificates:Possession of a valid Oklahoma Class D Driver's license. Must have (or obtain within six months of hire) Oklahoma Certified Chemical Applicator's License. WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work in this classification is primarily outdoors. Will travel to other City locations. Exposure to wet, hot, cold and/or humid conditions. Notice: This classification is a "safety sensitive" position as defined by the United States Department of Transportation drug and alcohol testing regulations, the Oklahoma Standards for Workplace Drug and Alcohol Testing Act and/or the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana laws. As a "safety sensitive" classification, you will be subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing. Marijuana is one of the substances included in the drug panel screening. Possession of a medical marijuana license will not excuse you from the testing process, or the consequences of testing positive for marijuana.
