About the Professional Licensing Agency:
The Indiana Professional Licensing Agency is seeking an individual to help protect the health and safety of the citizens of Indiana by providing quality, efficient service to all professional licensees, applicants, and the public. The fundamental purpose of this position is to provide administrative support to the board director, the licensing board/commissions, and to directly supervise the customer service representatives’ projects across a broad scope of career opportunities. Role Overview :
The Indiana Professional Licensing Agency is working to improve the efficiency and uniformity of its administrative processes, procedures, and changes to the administrative code. PLA seeks a highly motivated legal intern to assist with this initiative. The intern will assist with legal research, agency initiatives, and the administrative rulemaking process. The intern will have numerous opportunities to observe board meetings and administrative proceedings and to assist with the broader work of the Legal Division.
You can expect to work 37.5 hours over a 5 day week.
Salary Statement :
The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those who do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those who hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
Assists with providing counsel to the executive staff of the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency regarding litigation, disciplinary procedures, administrative complaints, procedures, and interpretation of statutes and rules.
Identifies and executes one major project related to agency needs. Provides legal support for projects requiring legal expertise.
Analyze data and feedback to provide recommendations.
Partners with relevant stakeholders to promote and enhance the quality of projects.
Collaborates with State of Indiana agencies to ensure effective implementation of internal and external initiatives.
Attends board meetings; may provide guidance, if assistance is requested.
Assists with rulemaking for boards and committees, including drafting, tracking, and processing of rules.
Reviews, drafts, edits contracts, if needed.
Other duties and projects and assigned.
Job Requirements:
At least one semester of law school education.
Actively working toward a license to practice law in Indiana.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Strong interest in administrative law and adjudication.
Ability to effectively work with internal agency staff, other state and federal agencies, board members, and external stakeholders.
Familiarity with WestLaw research software.
Ability to conduct well-informed research.
Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures.
