This role is part of the Lunar Transportation business unit, which develops Blue Origin's multiple Blue Moon lander product lines. To further Blue Origin's mission of having millions of people living and working in space, we are building sustainable infrastructure for our transport of crew and cargo from Earth to the lunar surface.

This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable space flight. As part of a small, passionate and accomplished team of experts, you will be responsible for developing and implementing welding/joining processes used in the manufacture of cryocoolers designed for zero-boiloff (ZBO) applications. You'll be expected to qualify and continuously improve these processes, as well as lead others in their application, to ensure design and manufacturing requirements are met. This position is based in Kent, WA.

Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To:

• Challenge the status quo by identifying and implementing welding/joining process improvements to drive reductions in cost and processing time while maintaining technical requirements and quality
• Lead and coordinate internal and external process development activities
• Identify root causes of nonconforming hardware and work proactively to identify and implement corrective actions
• Collaborate closely with design, analysis, manufacturing, quality, and integration engineers to disposition nonconforming hardware
• Interpret production drawings systematically, understanding the need for processes to meet established requirements
• Define and author material and/or process-development and qualification plans to utilize novel joining processes on spaceflight-qualified hardware
• Contribute to the development of internal engineering and quality processes to standardize and accelerate material evaluation, implementation, and qualification
• Create, improve, and maintain special process specifications

Minimum Qualifications:

• 7+ years of relevant welding and joining experience
• Minimum B.S. in Welding Engineering, Material Science Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
• Experience with at least one of the following processes: Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW), Orbital Tube Welding (OTW), or Laser Beam Welding (LBW)
• Proven experience developing and executing test plans for analysis and qualification of welding/joining processes
• Experience generating and delivering technical reports to team members and leadership
• Experience with implementing welding automation and/or mechanization
• Familiarity with standard methods of manufacturing, such as machining and inspections.
• Experience interpreting NDT/NDE results (such as UT, RT, PT)
• Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
• Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.
• Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion

Preferred Qualifications:

• Masters or PhD in Welding Engineering, Material Science/Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or related field
• Experience as a technical lead within a team and/or providing training/mentorship to junior team members
• Experience in the production, manufacturing, and assembly of spaceflight-qualified hardware
• Strong familiarity with AWS standards for various joining processes e.g., D17.1, C7.4/7.4M, C5.5/5.5M
• Experience in developing and implementing Design of Experiments to optimize manufacturing processes
• Experience working in an R & D environment
• Demonstrated experience working in cross-functional teams
• Experience with aerospace quality management systems supporting propulsion hardware
• Experience transitioning materials and processes from development to production
• Proven experience managing technology development projects, measuring technical progress, resources, and budgets

Compensation Range for: WA applicants is $140,959.00-$197,342.25. Other site ranges may differ.
