Job Description

The Sr. Product Designer is responsible for translating complex consumer and business needs into simple and elegant user experiences for CarMax’s digital properties that are industry-leading and brand-defining. He/she will lead the Product Design for large and/or complex products/product groups. He/she will drive collaboration, develop solutions and make recommendations based on user research and industry best practices to translate business strategies into world class online experiences that are grounded in consumer truths. In partnership with Product, Strategy and Engineering, he/she will be progressive, efficient and highly engaged; providing creative methods of interpreting customer perspectives. Essential responsibilities include creating intuitive and elegant product design solutions that solve complex consumer problems and drive business results; communicating solutions to stakeholders and executives; participating in user experience research; collecting and synthesizing qualitative and quantitative research; collaborating with Product Managers, Designers, Analysts and Developers; creating visual artifacts such as prototypes, wireframes, sketches, journey maps, personas; creating detailed design deliverables using CarMax design language system and pattern library; staying current on tools, principles and practices in product design; facilitating meetings and brainstorming sessions; mentoring and training junior design team members; advocating for high standards of excellence in user experiences. Qualifications include proven track record in designing high-quality consumer products, passion for technology and design, persuasive communication skills, good listening skills, collaborative work approach, solid understanding of user-centered design processes, experience with brainstorming and consensus building, ability to leverage user research, strong product design principles and deliverables, ability to convert ideas quickly into design artifacts, ability to perform design critiques, strong critical thinking and analysis skills, ability to train and mentor others, experience designing and prototyping native app and web solutions for various screen sizes, experience with Agile development processes, responsive/adaptive design experience and e-commerce experience are a plus. Education and experience required: 5+ years in product, interaction and visual design/development, BA/BS degree, portfolio or work samples showcasing product design skills. Technical skills required include advanced understanding of mobile and web technology, design principles, user-centered design process, presentation methods, usability and user research methods, data analysis, and collaboration techniques.
