POSITION OVERVIEW

This Tax Accountant will play a critical role in supporting the fuel tax operations, including overseeing the preparation of monthly fuel tax filings and payment processing. This position will also involve coordination with offshore teams, conducting in-depth research and analytics related to fuel tax compliance, and supporting the general ledger reconciliation process. The Senior Tax Accountant will be responsible for addressing discrepancies and collaborating with the Fuel Accounting Department to ensure accurate returns and timely payments.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Lead and assist in managing the offshore team for the accurate calculation and submission of monthly fuel tax returns.
• Oversee the filing of fuel tax returns and payment submissions, both electronically and via hard copies.
• Handle the preparation and submission of more complex fuel tax returns for multiple jurisdictions.
• Maintain tax records, schedules, and reports related to fuel and environmental taxes at the federal, state, and local levels.
• Analyze data from various fuel-related databases and ERP systems to support accurate reporting.
• Use software tools such as Avalara for automated reporting to various tax authorities.
• Proactively research and address any federal, state, or local tax notices promptly.
• Reconcile fuel tax discrepancies by reviewing account data and making necessary adjustments.
• Reconcile fuel tax transactions with the General Ledger during the fiscal period.
• Ensure compliance with SOX controls and safeguard financial data according to internal procedures.
• Respond to internal and external inquiries regarding fuel tax matters, providing clarity on tax regulations.
• Manage and facilitate fuel tax audits and document requests as needed.
• Provide support to the fuel tax team and assist in tasks as required.
• Stay informed about corporate tax policies, local regulations, and any changes affecting fuel tax compliance.
• Participate in training and development activities to stay up-to-date with industry trends.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field is preferred. Equivalent experience and education may be considered.
• A minimum of 1-5+ of relevant experience in fuel tax or a related area.
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and basic skills in Word.
• Experience with tax software platforms such as PDI and Avalara is a plus.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interpret complex regulations.
• Excellent problem-solving abilities and the capacity to manage multiple tasks effectively.
• A collaborative approach to working within a team environment.
• Highly organized with a keen eye for detail.
