About the Role: Uncommon Elementary School Teacher

As an Uncommon Elementary School Teacher , you will play a pivotal role in cultivating a love for learning in every student. Our classrooms are vibrant, culturally-responsive, and designed to be fun! Here, you will encourage respect, hard work, and celebrate the uniqueness of each student while laying the academic foundations that will carry them to and through college.

Your Responsibilities

1. Instruction

  • Co-teach and create an engaging classroom environment that fosters mastery and encourages academic discourse.
  • Teach foundational mathematics principles.
  • Develop students' literacy skills through reading and writing, focusing on phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
  • Deliver an ELA curriculum that prioritizes meaningful and relevant texts.
  • Teach a Science curriculum that covers geology, astronomy, ecology, and cycles in nature, empowering students to understand climate change.
  • Implement a Social Studies curriculum that analyzes America's diverse histories, emphasizing cultural and civic awareness.

2. Data Analysis

  • Meet weekly with your principal and/or instructional coach to analyze student work samples and assessments.
  • Learn and apply strategies to differentiate instruction for all learners.

3. School Culture

  • Build positive relationships with students, ensuring they feel seen, loved, and heard.
  • Collaborate with families to provide resources that support students’ learning needs.
  • Engage in practice-based professional development, mentorship, and coaching sessions.
  • Support morning arrival, lunch duty, student assemblies, class transitions, and after-school dismissal.
  • Participate in weekly school-wide meetings to foster community and encourage student achievement.
  • Work with your grade-level team to develop academic goals and instructional strategies.

  • Required Experience:
    • 1-2 years of experience impacting K-12 students in urban schools and communities is preferred.
    • Academic expertise in Elementary Education, Humanities, English, Social Sciences, or related fields.
    • A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required prior to employment. Teacher certification is not mandatory for consideration in NJ, but candidates must meet state certification eligibility requirements.

Compensation

The salary for this role ranges from $56,000 to $80,000 . Starting pay is determined by various factors, including relevant full-time teaching experience, educational certifications, and tenure with Uncommon Schools. Candidates without full-time teaching experience will likely start at $56,000.
